The concept of building your own airplane can be daunting for a lot of people. Most wouldn't consider building their own car, much less an airplane. In an effort to demystify the process, Zenith Aircraft held a four-day workshop at the Sebring Sport Aircraft Expo in January to introduce beginners to the process of building their own airplanes. Zenith Aircraft owner Sebastian Heintz told ANN news editor Tom Patton that there were 17 rudders built over the course of the four-day workshop. He said the workshop is designed to give the first-time builder a hands-on experience and learn as much about building an airplane as possible in a short time.

Dynon Avionics unveiled a new line of certified avionics for part 23 airplanes at AirVenture this summer. Michael Schofield, Marketing Director for Dynon Avionics, told ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell at Oshkosh that the line is lead by the company's flagship EFIS system. Dynon began working on the certified line shortly after the first STC was granted in April, 2016. Schofield said the company realized that attitudes at the FAA were changing with respect to certification of avionics, making the process go more smoothly.

Drone Racing came to the Sebring Sport Aviation Expo in January, with pilots competing for a $10,000 first prize. But the event was about more than just the money, according to Chris Thomas, founder and president of MultiGP, which organized the event. Thomas told ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell that the Sebring event was the first time MultiGP had worked with the FAA to conduct a drone race in close proximity to General Aviation activity. Thomas said that the drone racers are potential future pilots, and one of the advantages of FPV drone racing is that while the pilot is "on board" the aircraft, they are not injured, or worse, in an accident.
